Hey Shining Starrs. I pray that you are all doing well! Checking in after a bit of a hiatus as I work to get my year in order. I'm sure that you all have been thriving since we last connected!
Today I want to talk to you all about calling out your life. I'm sure that many of us have heard the saying that what we say is what we get. So saying "I'm so broke," "I'll never reach my goals," "everybody is doing what they want to do but me," does nothing but become the reality we live, as we have called for those things to find us. I believe heavily that whatever follows 'I am' is what will find and follow you. And from a biblical perspective (for those that subscribe), it's a known principal that we frame our worlds by the words we speak since the Word says that life and death are in the power of the tongue.
What are you speaking into your existence Shining Starrs? Presently I am speaking a few things into my life. As you all know, I do A LOT of things in this business. I'm always looking for things to learn and expand with. But I also realize after having a few varied conversations, that I need to lay out for myself and others, EXACTLY what I want to do and what I'm focusing on at this time.
With that in mind, at the top of this week, I decided that my number one priority for 2017 is blooming as Okema the ACTRESS. Specifically, I want to book at least one national commercial this year, at least three co-star or guest star roles on network television, at least one supporting role in a studio film or high-end indie project bound for Sundance, Cannes or the like, and at least one Equity straight play or musical. My secondary goals are to grow in my writing and producing. The end goal? To be a lead on a network show that I am also helping to write and/or Executive Produce, a la Issa Rae or Donald Glover. And to be the lead in a studio or high-end indie film that I have a hand in writing and/or producing a la Tika Sumpter who was the Executive Producer and lead actress in last year's South Side with You.
I took those goal and decided to apply my word of the year to them. That word is MOMENTUM. Thanks to the insanely talented Brian Everett Francis of Phazion photography, I got amazing new headshots (one of which is pictured above and for my actors, he is QUITE economical, so book your shoot today by clicking on his name). I checked in with the agent I'm currently freelancing with, Mr. Albert Bramante of Emerging Talent Agency in NY and he helped me to revamped my resume a bit. I was gifted an industry acting showcase class with celebrity acting coach Tracey Moore so I can stay sharp and as a bonus got Kevin Spacey's acting Masterclass along with Shonda Rhimes' writing Masterclass. I am getting a new acting reel cut, I'm writing a TV pilot (for which I am being paid!!!) and still stomping the pavement to get new writer, Ta-Tanishia Pearson's script BROKEN bought and made! Oh and I'm now fully eligible for the Actor's Equity Association (the Broadway union), so I plan to go out for some of those shows as well! Then I can sing AND act...we'll cross our fingers on the dancing part. Ha!
Those are the things I am personally doing to implement my goals. However, since I said out loud that those were my goals, I have gotten confirmation that next month I start shooting new episodes of the web series Deka-Log that include my character Fionna - mind you my character at first was a minor supporting character and now she's a part of the entire set of stories. I had a Netflix audition this week. I was asked to be the lead in a reading series that is headed to the DC Theatre Festival as well. And this happened all in the span of the two days that I spoke my plan and goals out loud.
I don't run all of this down to brag or be annoying. I do it to encourage you. Wade through the feelings of despair and disappointment. Trust me, I am and have been there. Not sure how bills will get paid. Not sure how I'm going to buy a monthly metro card to get around the city with the whole $13.08 in the bank. Taking gigs that are the fiscal equivalent to unemployment and knowing they will not sustain your livelihood. BUT, that is not our destiny. However, Kevin Hart said it...if you don't go through anything, what will you talk about when you make it? Who will you inspire if you have no story? So be encouraged loves, it will get better. Especially if you WILL it to!
I want you to SPEAK! Speak your dreams out loud. Say the things you want and be bold and audacious about it. Think of the most far-left and outrageous, unlikely and lofty goals and say them, write them down, put them on your prayer list, vision board or simply on a post it on your desk that you will see every day! Meditate on those things daily; see them, feel what it will be like when they are happening and then smile knowing it's coming. I promise that if you do these things, you will watch your life change. But be warned, it comes in like a flood, not a drizzle! So be ready when it comes as it will take you over!
Tell me...what are you dreaming for Shining Starrs? What seemingly impossible goals do you have? Share them with me so that I can speak them aloud in agreement with you! Or maybe, I can even assist in some way. Let's hold each other accountable and hold each other up and down to dream, speak our dreams and work towards them happening.
