I am a filmmaker. But I must say that I did not go to film school. I am completing a certificate program at NYU’s continuing education school for Production in Film, TV & New Media. But this was because I spent about 4 years on various sets and projects (from specs to features) learning hands on, reading books, taking workshops and messing up. LOL The certificate is for the purpose of learning the minutia of how to effectively run my production companies.
However, I do believe that if you have the resources and time to attend a full program, you should. It can only help, not hurt. But if you are like me, with more fiscal responsibilities than disposable income, more ideas and dreams than finances to execute these things on your own, and less time in terms of chronology than excessive years to figure ish out, that you seek those that REALLY know what they are doing and invest some sweat equity.
The payback of knowledge, experience and what NOT to do moving forward as you create your own things will be priceless!
